Lesson 24 review

I have received feedback from my fellow classmates for my first four pages of the magazine and also the billboard for the magazine, receiving feedback has allowed me to realize what i have done well and what i need to improve.

Feedback

Although the feedback i have received was to change the price of the magazine or the subscription on the front cover or the contents as on one page i have said the magazine is free however the subscription costs £22. Although this looks like an error i am not going to change this as my inspiration, The Crack Magazine, uses this as the price of the subscription is for the delivery of the magazines, however the actual magazines are free. From the feedback i am going to stick with the black and white images as the audience liked the colour scheme.

Lesson 24 aims

During this lesson i have gathered feedback from the front cover, double page spread, contents page and billboard. This feedback will help me improve my work.

Lesson 22 review

During todays lesson i have create the billboard to advertise the magazine. I have used photo shop to create this and used the same fonts and colour scheme to create synergy with the magazine.

Billboard

This is the first draft of the billboard which will advertise View magazine. I have used photo shop to create this billboard. The image is in black and white to create synergy with the magazine, this continues the house style. I have also used the same color scheme as the front cover of the magazine which also creates synergy.

As i have not created a billboard in AS, i have had no experience creating one and was not familiar with the features of a billboard. Therefore creating a billboard for my film magazine has allowed me to become familiar with the features of a billboard. I have learnt that only the main information should be on a billboard to make it easy for viewers to read. The image and background should also take up most of the space which is why I have used the image I have as the background of the image stretched over the rest of the billboard. I have used large, bold letters for the title of the billboard as this is the magazines name and the billboard is advertising the magazine. Viewers will instantly be able to tell the billboard is advertising the magazine as the name of it is in large bold letters. I have included the genre of the magazine in text underneath the masthead as the image does not give the genre away, letting the viewers know what genre the magazine is will allow the correct target audience to read the magazine. I have also chosen to write the name of the region the magazine is based around so readers know the magazine is regional to Newcastle.

lesson 22 aim

During todays lesson i am going to produce a billboard to advertise my magazine. This is an ancillary for the magazine, i am going to use the images from the photo shoot and use photo shop to produce the billboard.

During todays lesson i have started to draft the contents page of my magazine. However i am going to alter the layout of the page to make it look more professional.

Contents page draft

Wednesday, 18 November 2015

Lesson 17 aims

During todays lesson i am going to start to produce the contents page of my magazine. I am going to use my flat plans to create the design of the page. I am going to include images from both of the photo shoots.

lesson 16 review

During this lesson i have created the double page spread for my magazine. I have used photoshop to create the whole page and have edited the image on photoshop.

Double page spread draft

This is the first draft of the double page spread in the magazine. I have used this image as it separates the page perfectly and creates a dark background which i can contrast the writing with. I have changed the colour of the image to black and white as this fits in with the house style of the magazine. The black and white image contrasts with the colours used for the text and titles which makes them stand out. I have made the title of the page yellow as this fits in with the house style used on the contents page. This creates synergy between all of the pages on the magazine. I have included a pull quote which is positioned next to the image which gives the reader a taste of what is included in the article without reading the whole article. The pull quote is blue as this differs from the main article and also stands out from the black background. I have included the masthead of the magazine on the double page spread as this is a common feature on double page spreads. My inspiration, Empire magazine, use this feature on their double spreads.

On the first draft of the double page spread i had a question and answer section instead of a main article. This is not a typical convention of a film magazine and made the page look less professional therefore i changed it to a main article which made the page look more organized and fit in with the typical conventions of a film magazine. I have also added the page numbers as i did not include them in the first draft. I have used a small text and basic font for the page numbers as they should not stand out on the page however the readers should be able to read them. Including page numbers is a typical convention of a magazine which i why i have included them to make my magazine look as professional as possible.

lesson 14 review

During this lesson I have created a mood board of possible fonts I am going to use for the mast head on the front cover and throughout the magazine. I have decided on a font which I am going to use as the masthead. Carrying out this task will help me plan out where the mast head is going to go on the page.

Sunday, 1 November 2015

Fonts

I have created a mood board with a few fonts which I may use on the front cover, contents page and double page spread of the magazine. I have chosen fonts which are bold and will stand out on a page. Some of the fonts are linked in with my genre of film. This will appeal to the target audience. Bold fonts will be easy to the eye for the audience which will persuade them to pick up the magazine. It is important that I plan out which fonts I am going to use so I can plan out how the pages are going to look.

After researching more fonts which could be a potential masthead on my front cover i have came across the font i am going to use.

Saturday, 31 October 2015

lesson 14 aims

I am going to research fonts which I could potentially use as a masthead on the front cover and throughout the magazine. This will save time when creating the mast head as the font will already be decided.

Calender

During the research and planning period of the magazine I have created a calendar which has helped me plan out when to complete work and set myself deadlines in order for the work to be completed.

As September was the first month of research and planning, most of the tasks consisted of making decisions about what the magazine is going to look like and creating surveys to gather data. Although I completed these tasks I think I could have been more effective with my time during September to make the research as detailed as possible and to make the work the best it can be.

In October I used my time more effectively in lessons which enabled me to complete more tasks and gather more research. During this month I analysed the data collected and decided on a target audience. This has allowed me to make final decisions about the magazine as I can use data gathered from readers to make the magazine more successful. In this month I also planned out a photo shoot which I am going to carry out to get professional images which is going to be used within my magazine.

Monday, 19 October 2015

Lesson 13 review

During todays lesson i have planned out the photo shoot by answering questions which has helped me make decisions on what my photos are going to look like and and how my model is going to dress and pose. The recce has helped me cover any issues i may have with health and safety during the photo shoot.

Final Shoot Ideas and planning

Recce

Are there any potential hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where your photo shoot will take place (trailing cables/traffic/other objects )?

Although there may not be any safety risks when doing the shoot in the studio, there will be many risks when shooting the location shots. There will be heavy traffic in Newcastle as it is a city centre. There will also be a lot of people around which could produce a potential risk. To overcome these risks I am going to go when it is not rush hour to minimise traffic and also stick to pathways to ensure I am not putting myself in danger. However there may be risks in the studio as there will be cables from the lights etc. To minimise these risks I am going to make sure the cables are out of the way to stop myself or the model from tripping over them. I am also going to be quick as possible when shooting to ensure the lights or camera do not over heat.

Will the time of day/weather affect the outcome of the photos? Have you allowed for this?

The time of day will effect the outcome of the photos as I do not want many people around when taking the photos, I am going to go at a time of day where people are in work or school to minimise the amount of people around. I am going to plan to go on a day where the weather is sunny however not too sunny so my images are not effected by the sun. I am going to allow for a chance of clouds.

Have you considered the background to your photos, particularly if taken outside? How will you ensure you will get the background you want?

I am going to include as little background as possible to make sure no unwanted objects are in the photos. To do this I am going to use the zoom on the camera and take close up shots of the signs to the locations. I am also going to take photos of posters around the location. I am going to ensure I get the right background by taking the images at the correct angle and position.

Have you considered lighting? What about the ‘problems’ of natural lighting, either outside, or streaming through a window? Will you need to use a flash?

As I am going to take the location photos during the day when its sunny, I am going to use natural lighting. I will not need to use any flash. During the photo shoot in the studio i am going to use low key lighting. Natural lighting will not effect the shoot in the studio.

Do you need permission to take photos in the place/venue you have in mind?

As I am shooting in a city centre I will not need to get any permission however I will do for the studio. To gain permission I am going to contact the person in charge of the photography studio at the university. I will set a time and date for the shoot so the person in charge can prepare the studio before the model and I arrive.

Are you reliant on lifts/props/friends’ equipment/models? How have you planned that these things will come together at the appointed time? Plan B?

I am reliant on my model to get to the studio on time for the shoot, to make sure she is on time I am going to suggest buses she can get which will ensure she arrives on time. I am also reliant on the props in the studio to make my images more effective. I am going to have to rely on public transport to get me to Newcastle city centre on the day of the location shoot, if the public transport is late or fails to arrive I  am going to arrange to get a lift from my parents. This will ensure I arrive to be able to do the shoot.

photoshoot planning

Lesson 13 aims

During todays lesson i am going to complete a photo shoot plan and recce. This is going to help me decide what my images are going to look like and make sure i have thought of every possible situation before doing the photo shoot.

Deconstructions

From this task I have been able to develop my knowledge of already established products similar to my own. I have chosen to deconstruct big names as they are very popular products. This task has helped me create ideas for my own products by basing them on already existing products to make it look as professional as possible.

Lesson 12 review

I have used this lesson to create a reader profile which has allowed me to analyse my survey responses and see what my target audience prefer. This will benefit me when making decisions during the production of the magazine.

Reader profile

Creating a reader profile has benefited me as it has allowed me to organise the results gathered from the survey. It has also allowed me to analyse the results which I can then make decisions from. The reader profile is set out to make it easier to look at the results from the survey. These results help me gather more information about the potential target audience.

Lesson 12 aims

During this lesson i am going to complete a reader profile. I am going to gather the information for the reader profile by looking at my survey responses.

Target Audience Profiles

Powered by emazeThe people I have included in the target audience profiles will buy my magazine as they are interested in films and also socialising. They are students therefore will want the cheapest deal, as my magazine is going to be free they will be persuaded to pick up the magazine. However I am not going to include any form of music in my magazine, which is a common interest between the profile, this may discourage them from getting the magazine.

Lesson 11 review

During this lesson i have completed the target audience profiles which consist of questions relating to my magazine. I have asked three people who are in my target age group which has allowed me to gather information on what will persuade them to purchase the magazine.

Similar products and inspirations

Lesson 11 aims

My aims for this lesson is to create target audience profiles which will allow me to gather more information about the target audience. I will ask questions which are related to the genre of my magazine. I am also going to look at similar products which could be used as inspirations.

Lesson 10 review

I have successfully created flat plans for the first four pages of the magazine and also 3 page of the website. I have created a flat plan for the billboard as well. This has helped me plan the magazine and make are i have included all the features. I have created rationales for each page to plan what exactly i am putting on the pages.

Rationale+ Flatplans

Powered by emaze

Rationalles:

Front cover: I have positioned the masthead at the top of the page as this will stand out on a shelf which will make the audience more likely to pick up the magazine. I am going to make the main image the main feature on the page as this will appeal to readers as it will be easy on the eye and this follows the typical conventions of a magazine. The sell lines are positioned on the left hand side of the page so they fit around the main image and make the page look organised. The main sell line is positioned across the bottom of the main image and is larger than the other sell lines as this is the main article in the magazine. The essential information which includes the price and barcode of the magazine is positioned in the bottom right corner of the magazine and is smaller than the other features on the page.
Contents page: The masthead is positioned in the top right corner of this page and will be smaller than the one on the front cover. It is going to be in the same font and colour as the front cover to create synergy. The title of the page is in the centre of the page to stand out. This is going to be in a different colour than the other text. The main image is going to cover half of the page and is not going to have any features covering it. The features are going to be under the main image along with a subscription advert which will be positioned at the bottom of the page. I have altered the design slightly when creating the product and have not included a second image on the page as it would of not suited the layout.
Double Page Spread: The left page is going to be covered by the main image which will continue onto the next page, there will be a pull quote on this page also. The right hand side of the double page spread is going to include the title of the article which will be the same as the main sell line on the front cover. Underneath will be a brief introduction of the article which will give the readers an insight on the article. This will be written in the same font and colour as the main body of text. The main body of text will be underneath and separated into two sections to make the page organised. The page numbers will be small and situated in the corner of the pages.

Website:
The home page of the website is going to consist of the main image from the main article and two other images which create a slideshow which changes automatically. Two other images are going to be used underneath this to link to two different pages. The menu for the website is going to be situated in the top right corner which will stay in the same place on all pages. The font and colour scheme is going to be similar to the magazine to create synergy with the other products. The sell lines are going to be positioned under the main image with a brief description of the article. The first hyperlinked page is of the main article which will consist of the main image which is used on the double page spread in the magazine spread across the top half of the page. The bottom half of the page is going to be the article which will be in the same font and colour as the other text. The second hyperlinked page is the feature page of the website which will consist of images and small pieces of text, this will be similar to a contents page. The images used will be linked to the purpose of the article. When creating this page I have altered the design slightly by places the images and text next to each other rather than under each other as this makes the page more organised and fits better on the page.

Billboard: The billboard is mostly covered by the main image which will be in black and white to follow the house style of the brand, the image is the main feature on this product. The masthead will be the largest piece of text on the page to show readers it is linked to the magazine. Underneath the masthead will be a subhead which will inform the readers of the genre of the magazine. The web address will also be on the billboard in the bottom right hand corner so readers can link to the website.

Lesson 10 aims

During this lesson i am going to upload the flat plans of the magazine, website and billboard. I am also going to create rationales for each one.

Magazine recreation

Original:
 Recreation:
I have recreated a front cover of Empire Magazine. I have chosen this magazine to recreate as it is the same genre as my magazine which has allowed me to become familiar with the features used on a film magazine which will help me when it comes to producing the front cover. To recreate this magazines front cover i used Photoshop, this program is going to be the main program i am going to use when producing my magazine therefore this recreation benefitted me as i was able to practice using photoshop. Recreating a magazine front cover allowed me to become familiar with the features used. This front cover is a limited edition therefore nay has one sell line, this will attract fans of this film. The have used a simple colour scheme which makes the cover bold and it stands out.

Lesson 8 review

During this lesson I have recreated a front cover. I chose to recreate a front cover of a film magazine using photoshop as this is the same genre as my magazine. When recreating the magazine I have been able to practice using Photoshop, which has benefited me as I am now more confident with the program.

lesson 8 aims

During this lesson I am going to recreate a magazine of the same genre as mine which will help me become familiar with the features used on a front cover of a film magazine. Therefore I will be more confident when creating my own magazine.

Monday, 28 September 2015

Lesson 7 review

During this lesson I have planned out the questions I am going to ask in the interview. Planning out the question has helped me include all the detail I need to and it also ensures I gather all the information needed.

Interview questions

Before carrying out the interview i have planned what questions i am going to ask to collect as much data as possible. I have used qualitative and quantitative questions which will gather a range of information.

lesson 7 targets

During this lesson i am going to plan out which questions i am going to ask in my interview and also think about how i am going to film the interview.

Survey

Please complete my survey and answer questions honestly

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3K7H3WD

Along with posting the link to my survey on blogger i have also shared the link on Facebook. This will widen the range of responses and give more people the chance to complete the survey. Posting the link on social media will benefit me as more people will complete the survey therefore i will have more responses to analyze. I have also posted the link on twitter as i have a different range of followers therefore i will gather a larger range of results.

lesson 6 review

During this lesson I have created a survey on survey monkey, I have included questions which will help me gather more data about the target audience. I have the posted the link for the survey on Facebook, Twitter and have personally sent it to a few contacts to make sure I get a range of responses.

lesson 6 aims

During this lesson I am going to produce a survey on survey monkey to gather more information about the potential target audience.

Monday, 21 September 2015

Lesson 5 review

During this lesson I have created a storyboard for my interview, I am then going to produce this interview to gather more research about the target audience.

Interview plan

I have created a storyboard of shots i am going to use in my interview. This has allowed me to pal out the interview to make it as easy as possible when filming. Before making the storyboard i researched interviews which allowed me to become familiar with the type of shots used and the language used. One of the interviews i looked at was between Russell Brand and Jeremy Paxman. This interview was  a formal interview however Russell Brands posture and gestures made it become informal. When watching the interview i took notes of which shots had been used, from this i was able to plan to use these shots in my interview. I have also planned out how the interviewee should sit as this reflect the formality of the interview.

Lesson 5 aims

During this lesson I am going to plan out an interview using the format of an already existing interview to guide me. I am using another interview as a template to make sure I plan out the right shot types.

Lesson 4 review

During this lesson I have thought about and wrote down my primary and secondary target audience whilst doing research into these audiences. This will also help me when creating the website and billboard for the magazine.

Primary and secondary target audience breakdown

To describe my primary and secondary target audience i have drawn an outline of a person which represents my primary target audience. My primary target audience is males between the ages of 15-25. These males are going to have a low income as they are students. I have outlines the main characteristics my primary target audience is going to have as this will help me make decisions when it comes to producing the magazine.

Lesson 4 aims

In this lesson I aim to breakdown my target audience into primary and secondary. This will help me when making decisions on the magazine and also when researching the target audience.

pitch feedback

After presenting my pitch to my fellow class members I received feedback not only from them but from my lecturer as well. This feedback will allow me to reflect on my work and bring out the strengths within the work however will also allow me to notice the weak points and give me a chance to improve them.
From this feedback it has came to my attention that to make the pitch more detailed I should explain which fonts and colours I am going to use in the magazine and why I am going to use them. This will allow me to plan out a colour scheme I am going to use and think about why I am going to use it. Fonts and colours are an important aspect to the magazine as they can make the magazine bolder or more subtle. After completing research I have decided to use a bold font as the mast head as this will make the magazine stand out on a shelf in a store which will reduce the risk of the magazine failing.

Monday, 14 September 2015

Lesson 3 review

During this lesson I have researched existing competition that could be a threat to my magazine. I have explained why I would use the same features as this magazine to reduce the risk of my magazine failing.

Lesson 3 aims

During the third lesson I am going to identify existing magazines which could possibly compete against my magazine. I am going to identify the features they have used which may inspire me to use them in my magazine.

Pitch

Wednesday, 9 September 2015

lesson 2 review

During this lesson i have added to my pitch and have include more detail, this has helped me think about what features I am going to include in the magazine along side the colour scheme I am going to use.

Lesson 2 aims

During the second lesson i am going to improve and add to my pitch by making it more detail and expanding on work i have already done.

Billboard reconstruction

Original billboard:

 Reconstruction of billboard:

I have reconstructed a billboard for the film 'Fifty Shades Of Grey'. I have reconstructed a film billboard as my magazine is based upon films. Recreating this billboard allowed me to become familiar with the layout of a billboard and also allowed me to practice using photoshop. This will improve my skills which will be visible when creating the magazine. I have used photoshop to create this billboard as it is the main program i am going to use during the creation of my product. When looking for a billboard to recreate it has come to my attention creators use basic information to make it easy to the eye and appealing to look at. If i was to recreate this billboard again i would use my own photos as this would make the billboard more original and he images would be better quality.

Monday, 7 September 2015

Lesson 1 reflection

I managed to complete a reconstruction of a billboard for the film '50 Shades Of Grey' which allowed me to practice my photoshop skills whilst becoming familiar with the layout of a billboard.

Lesson 1 Aims

During this lesson i am going to complete a reconstruction of a film billboard which will allow me to practice my photoshop skills.

Reflection of AS coursework

How it went: Over the course of the first year my skills have significantly developed. I have become used to using photoshop therefore was able to develop a page is a short space of time. I have also learned how to use an Apple Mac therefore i was able to access photoshop in college. The Mac's have made it easier to complete my work as they are faster therefore i do not have to wait for the computer to load. However during the last month of the the memory stick i was using corrupted and i therefore lost a large chunk of my work and had to re create all of the pages for my magazine from scratch. This set me back quite a lot therefore my work did not come out at standard i would of liked it to be.

Strengths: As I was the model for my magazine I was able to retake any photographs without any hassle, whereas if I had used a different model I would have had to work around their schedule. Another strength of the magazine is the images used alongside the main image on the contents page. I have used images which I have taken myself at concerts and events therefore these images are my own and I have not broken any copyright rules.

Weakness: As i lost a lot of my work, a weakness of mine was not backing up my work from my memory stick onto another device such as a hard drive or computer. In result of not backing up my work I lost a chunk of data which included all images I was planning on using and completed pages of the magazine. From this weakness I am going to progress by always backing up all work as soon as it is completed to avoid this issue happening again in the future.

Brief

Magazine Brief

The first four pages from an original regional magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style), together with two of the following three options:
a radio advertisement for the magazine;
two hyperlinked pages from the magazine’s website;
a billboard advertisement for the magazine.
